Teacher-centered mode of the traditional classroom teaching can not meet the requirements of English teaching based on the reform of new curriculum. The present research is an empirical study of the application of constructivist theory in English classroom teaching in an attempt to explore a new English teaching method for senior high school. The researcher proposed a constructivist-based English classroom teaching framework based on the analysis of literature. Then, an empirical experiment was conducted for a semester in two groups, one of which served as the experimental group where the constructivist-based English classroom teaching was put into practice, that is, the teaching mode of autonomy-cooperation-exploration was carried out, and the other served as the control group that was instructed with the traditional teaching method. The pre-test and post-test as well as pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire on English effective classroom were employed in both groups. The results revealed that after one semester's English effective classroom teaching, the experimental group students'English not only significantly exceeded that of the control group but also made their own significant progress compared with the beginning of the semester. However, the control group did not make much progress. Then a discussion is made based on the statistical data derived from the experiment and the data collected from questionnaires and analysis of literature. Finally a conclusion is drawn: English classroom teaching based on constructivist can promote students'interest and confidence in English learning in senior high school and is supportive for students'capability of autonomous-cooperative-exploring learning, thus fostering the development of a lifelong learner.
