Xu xun scholar once said that the world political pattern characterized by two major camps demised with the end of Cold War In the early 1990s.Political ideologies of the two camps lost theoretical and practical significance overnight, while nationalism developed fast and got prominent in the world. It can be seen and experienced everywhere in both country politics and public occasions, such as celebrations, sacrificial rituals, sports competitions, education, culture, performances, entertainments, etc.. In the new era, nationalism has become the focus of the international community. It is not only the most active factor that influences the development of contemporary world but also the crux that decides competitions, cooperations and conflictions of nations, states and state groups. Researches about nationalism not only benefit all states and nations in profound understanding of the importance and complexity of national problems in order to formulate national policy and handle national relationships correctly but also help us to profoundly explore various international relation theories in order to clearly understand the developing trends of world pattern and to actively construct a harmonious world. Therefore, it is inevitable to recognize the future trends of nationalism in the development of human society in the 21st century. To clear up the development of the post-cold-war nationalism and its future trend, this thesis expounds from five chapters. The first chapter elaborates the connotation and evolution of nationalism. By analyzing the classical Marxism theories and researches of famous scholars at home and abroad, this thesis systematically defines nationalism as an ideology, a political principle or creed, a theoretical system and a kind of social practice or mass movements. Nationalism mainly undergoes through three major developing waves, namely the post-World-War-I nationalism, the post-World-War-II nationalism and the post-cold-War nationalism. The second chapter demonstrates the manifestations of the post-cold-war nationalism. Incorporating its new characteristics, this part shows mainly three forms:political nationalism and its manifestations, economic nationalism and its manifestations, cultural nationalism and its manifestations. This helps help us to understand the impacts of post-cold-War nationalism and its future. The third chapter introduces the causes of post-cold-war nationalism. At present, relationships of world nations are complex while nationalism manifestations are formed with deep historical roots, specific backgrounds and various intertwined reasons. Political, economic and cultural reasons are mainly analyzed in this part. The fourth chapter forecasts future trends of post-cold-war nationalism. This paper argues that nationalism will develop continually in the new era. Its general trend can not be simply summarized as strong or weak and should be analyzed in-depth according to specific circumstances. As its causes and consequences are mainly reflected in political, economic and cultural levels, this section mainly prospects from these aspects. This thesis concludes that the future trend of nationalism not only closely links with the fate of nations and states but also depends on their transformation and transcendence about nationalism. Its development will greatly influence the construction of a harmonious world. Therefore conceptions about how to actively build a harmonious world are given in international politics and diplomatic order, in world economic order and in world culture.
