| This article is mainly on U.S.President Calvin Coolidge Administration's diplomatic policy towards China——from August 3, 1923 to March 3,1929——in the development process and its characteristics and impacts,and simplely reviews the evolution of U.S.Government's diplomatic policy towards China before Coolidge Administration.As the U.S.being strong and growing,U.S.Government's diplomatic policy towards China continued to move forward while the international situation changes.From firstly acting as a follower of the British and French in the Opium War to a proponent of open-door principle, to a winner of Washington Conference,had undergone these evolutions of the role of aggression against China,step by step.Since Coolidge succeed as the President of the United States on August 3,1923,Coolidge Administration had played the role of defender of the Washington system over five and a half years.Basing on the diplomatic considerations such as the dramatic change which was from fragmented situation to the form of reunification in China,Coolidge Administration gradually adjusted its diplomatic policy towards China and formed a new policy.It had changed the policy in which U.S.Government invade China by coordination and cooperation with other powers in the past,and implemented a more moderate and independent diplomatic policy towards China;had changed the previous policy which emphasized on using force manners to deal with China affairs, and tended to cope with China affairs by diplomatic means.On the whole, Coolidge Administration's diplomatic policy towards China is independent and moderate.Its implementation objectively promoted the campaign in which Chinese people repealed the unequal treaties,and let Chiang Kai-shek become the agent who safeguarded the interests in China for U.S.Government;To maintain and enhance the status and the influence of United States in China;Had good or bad effects on the Washington system,and made some preparations for the collapse of Washington system in future. |
