Abstract/Summary:
The year of 2005 is the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Europe diplomatic relations, which now experience a flourishing and most fruitful stage in its development. This promising phenomenon opens up broad possibilities for the enhancement of the Sino- Europe relations. Situated at the both ends of Eurasia continents, China and Europe are two rising political entities that are pursuing stable, long-term strategic cooperation. This cooperation exerts great influence on the restructuring of the world order, redounding to the establishing of a balanced, polynary world order. America is a major external power in stimulating as well as confining the strategic cooperation between the two entities. The writer of this thesis perceives the triangular interactions among China, Europe and America from the perspective of geostragegy. Beginning with an interpretation of related concepts about geostrategy, it expounds the research topics and characteristics of geostrategy. Geostrategy is a strategy theory derived from geopolitics. With the change in world political structuring, the theory, methodology and analytical perspectives in geostrategic theoretical studies have been diversified and comprehensive with more emphasis on analyzing the geopolitics and geoculture besides the geopolitical analysis.China and Europe are two pillars of Eurasia continents, and America is a sea power far from Eurasia continents. Thus America has always considered Eurasia continents as the strategic focus. During the cold war, in face of threats from heartland in Eurasia continents, America relegated the Sino-Europe relations to secondary relations by exercising strict control over Sino- Europe geostrategy development. Out of the same reason, China and Europe have put primary emphasis on their geostrategic relations with America. Thus Sino-America relations and American-Europe relations enjoys privilege over Sino-America relations. Of the structure of world geostrategy, the relations among China, Europe and America are far less mature and important than that of China, Europe, and Soviet Union. Typical triangular relations haven't formed yet. Aftermath of the Cold War, especially after the 9.11 incident and the America-Iraq War, the frictions between America and Europe have been greatly intensified, and Sino- Europe interactions havebecome significant. On one hand China and Europe face the pressures from America resulting from geopolitical, geoeconomic and geocultural factors. On the other hand, America is increasingly confronted with threats from China and Europe, the interactions between which are non-secondary relations and beyond the control of America. With the deepening of Sino- Europe interactions, the triangular relations among China, Europe, and America have taken into form. How to approach Sino-Eu relations, Sino-America relations and the triangular relations among them have been the hot issues faced by Chinese government. The focus of Sino-America relations has transformed from "China issue" to "China's rising issue", with the latter richer and more profound. We must actively and calmly develop Sino-Eu relations. It's urgent that China carries out a "wide peripheral diplomacy" strategy in creating a stable, peaceful adjacent environment for its development.
