As a part of third industry, sports industry has become the new growth of national economy with great potentiality and good perspective. The development of sports industry can not only satisfy people's demand of keeping fit, but also play an crucial role in adjusting the structure of industry, enlarging the local economic need, pushing forward the increase of relevant industries and offering more work opportunities. With the rapid economic increase in Wuhan, sports industry has shown a good tendency of development. However, the government does not yet have the whole awareness of the circumstance of sports industry in Wuhan, let alone the clear plan of development. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to have a research on the development of sports industry in Wuhan.The thesis has investigated contemporary circumstances of the development of sports industry in Wuhan on aspects of the structure of sports industry, the structure of sports consumption and relevant policies on sports industry. From the view of industry structure, the employment of the sports industry is not well distributed and a large part of professional employees escapes to other work lines; Non-state run corporations dominate the sports industry; Sports installations could not satisfy the demand of people, on the other hand, some are not made good use of; In the aspect of sports product, matter-formed products like sports clothes and instruments sale well, but service-formed products like gymnastics and entertainment earns little although it increase fast, in which the production of competition show should be encouraged; Products are not made good use of and the resources are wasted because of the little connection among different parts of sports industry. The unbalance of the structure in sports industry is formed by several reasons. Firstly,during the conversion from planning economy to marketing economy, the sense of openness and marketing has not yet been set up, which could not immediately adapt to the demand of marketing economy. Secondly, the deficiency of people's sports need make the development of sports industry in lack of energy. Thirdly, it is also influenced by Chinese sports strategy.From the view of the structure of sports consumption, the proportion of consumption on sports service like watching competitions and exercising in gymnasiums is a little bigger than the matter consumption like sports clothes, instruments, books and magazines. The consumption on sports is mainly affected by the income and it is also different between men and women. In Wuhan, men consume a little more than women. On the motivation of sports consumption, there is great difference according to sex and age. The domain factors that affect the sports consumption in Wuhan are the economic increase, the change on the structure of consumption, the extension of national exercise movement and ageing of population.The rapid development of sports industry in Wuhan is the result of execution of national policies and presence of local service policies for the development of sports industry by the government of the city. However, the policy support as a whole is still weak and lack of system. The council policies cover the aspects of economy, finance, the usage of land and social service, nevertheless, each aspect is touched on surface without forming a scientific system, and there is no clear policy to tell how to cultivate the sports market, how to improve the management and consumption and how to accelerate the construction of sports facilities.
