Red Tourism is a specialized form of tourism activity and production that has sprung up in recent years (in the People's Republic of China). With distinct Chinese characteristics, Red Tourism's major attractions are revolution-related historical relics that embody a patriotic spirit (unique to modern China). Further development of Red Tourism is critically strategic and pragmatic for strengthening the education of revolutionary heritage, in addition to invoking national sensibility and ethos among the populace, particularly among teen-agers., Red Tourism is also critical for further developing new space in tourism economic development, and to promote economy balanced community and regional social economic development..From the middle 1990's into the 21st century, Red Tourism has been on the rise and its ascent seems in parallel to the rise of power and of economic and community benefits created through government efforts. This has helped promote a good many related industries,, such as construction, trade, transportation, telecommunication, manufacturing, agriculture, and so on. In 2003, major Red Tourism sites had 100 million tourist arrivals, with 20 billion Yuan of comprehensive economic benefits realized. Red Tourism has thus stepped onto a new development phase of widespread common interests. Meanwhile, some problems arise with the development of Red Tourism, which demands considerations. Many areas have plunged into exploiting Red Tourism resources and building revolution memorials one after another, only to involve themselves in relatively low-level development, with the nature and sustainability of Red Tourism overlooked. This spontaneous tourism development situation is occurring in many Red Tourism destinations. Furthermore, Red Tourism marketing is plummeting because the government plays an over-important part in its development, which leaves Red Tourism in the stage of reception and bursary tour to a certain degree. The government, corporations and researchers have developed growing interest in studying Red Tourism in recent years., Theoretic research on Red Tourism, however, appears slow and weak compared to its flourishing practice.Based on the production cycle theory, core-margin theory, sustainable development theory, and subsection marketing theory, this thesis is thus an effort to study Red Tourism in the following three aspects:------Related theories on Red Tourism. First of all, to discern the Red culturerelated to tourism, the significance of Red Tourism, the type, and the characteristics ofRed Tourism resources, the law and function of Red Tourism, and the like. Secondly, to recognize that Red Tourism is a spiritual cultural tourism product based on Red Tourism resources which encompass the revolutionary relics and spirits formed in the course of some 80 years of revolutionary experience since the May 4th Movement, including the Second Civil Revolution, Anti-Japanese War, and Liberation led by the CCP before New China came into existence. Thirdly, Red Tourism came into being with the development of organized revolutionary heritage and nationalism education. It was then promoted from reception to tourism industry, from the mode of mere political education to that of marketing.------Research on the development and distribution of Red Tourism. Thisthesis offers the structural model of the driving force system for Red Tourism built up on the analysis of Red Tourism development in China, and illustrates its sustainable development. Hence this thesis explores the regional theme model, the regional difference model and the product development model by way of analyzing the space distribution of Red Tourism resources, that of comparing its development model in different regions, and that of typical case studies in Jinggangshan, Yan'an, and other cities.------Case studies. Taking Shanghai as the demonstration case, this thesis putsforward the goal and measures of developing metropolitan Red Tourism in Shanghai by analyzing its growth status, current situation, and competitiveness.
