A Study On The Region Identity Of Returned Overseas Chinese Diasporas

Dongxing Town is an important border town in Guangxi, and it's also the location of Dongxing City government. During the large-scale anti-Chinese incidents in Vietnam at the end of the 1970s, Dongxing town is one of the main entries into China for Vietnamese overseas Chinese. After Dongxing town opened in 1989, the border trade was prosperous and many returned overseas Chinese came here to settle down from overseas Chinese farms everywhere. During the process,different returned overseas Chinese created varying degrees of region identity of Dongxing town. On the basis of the materials from fieldwork, Supplemented by historical documents, this thesis adopts identity theory and anthropological research methods to discuss the region identity of the returned overseas Chinese Diasporas lived in Dongxing town. The author points out that the features of the returned overseas Chinese Diasporas are diverse in vocations, time of residence and personal experiences. These features endow their region identity with stability and unsettled. It also makes part of returned overseas Chinese's regional identity in deficiency. During the process of acquiring diverse region identity, the reform of the overseas Chinese farms, the prosperous border trade and local dialect, custom and the city's inclusiveness are the main factors for them to obtain stable regional identity. And among these factors,self factors are the key factor generating diverse regional identity. By this study, we can enrich the research on the returned overseas Chinese. On the other hand, we can provide some reference for the government to help them integrating into the local community better.
