Between Sciences And Humanities

The contention between sciences and humanities has continued for a long time in the West, which is apparent in the "controversy between sciences and metaphysics " in 1922―1923 in China . The main purpose of this thesis is to open out predicament of choosing science or metaphysics in the modern China. It will in turn point out the realistic approach to dispersing contradiction of these two cultures in new conditions. The thesis consists of three sections. The first section from an investigation of the relationship between science and metaphysics reveals that the controversy is not only an embodiment of the contradiction of two cultures, but also the very result of colliding between Chinese traditional culture and western culture. So the controversy is not an only " historical misunderstanding" as someone said! The second formulates such disagreements as the instrument-reason and value-reason,determinism and indeterminism,scientism and humanism,and therefore points out that the controversy is the typical case of Snow's proposition. The third section puts an emphasis on the realistic approach to acquiring compatible relationship between two cultures.
