A Study On Making Urumqi A Modernized International Trade Center

Sound and rapid development of a city relies on if she has right orientation of development. The city committee and city government of Urumqi set forth a macro target for making Urumqi a modernized international trade center to salute the western development and promote steady progress of the national economy and social course of Urumqi. Through the theoretical and practical analysis, the essay shows advisability of such orientation. At the same time, it evaluates current situation of commercial development of Urumqi and puts forward some strategic measures on making Urumqi an international trade center. It is worth to emphasize that international trade centers can be devided into two types: the global international trade center and regional international trade center. The former shows the city of which radiative role covers main countries and regions in the world while the latter is the one which spreads to a certain area of the world. It is the latter that Urumqi wants to be. One more point we should note that establishing an international center doesn't mean to develop commerce and trade at the cost of other industries. As a first reason, we would like to show that the developed second industries are the prerequisite for the formation of a trade center. For example, cities like New-York, London and Tokyo have become present global trade center on the basis of industrialized cities. The total industrial production value of London in 1987 accounted for thirteen percent of the total industrial production value of the whole nation in that year. Moreover, the commercial and trade development depends, at large extent, on the development of the relevant third industries including postal and telecommunications,finance, insurance, tourism and social service etc.The essay is composed mainly of three chapters, including theoretical and practical analysis. The theoretical part is presented in chapter one and chapter twowhile the the practical part is given in chapter three. As the introduction, the author illuminates the research background of this paper and significance of this subject. The instructional theory and method of this work are also laid out in this section.Chapter one starts with the theoretical definition of "commerce and trade" and illustrates the history of trade, such as its naissance and development. It also discusses its status and role in the market economy, thereby clarifying the importance of current development of commerce and trade of Urumqi.Chapter two illuminates the definition and characteristics of regional trade center from the theoretical point of view and establishes the target system drawn on it.Chapter three firstly illustrates the time-honored basis for developing commerce and trade through explaining the zigzag history of commercial development of Urumqi before and after the liberation. Furthermore, it evaluates the present commercial situation of the city by the use of the target system established in chapter two and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of Urumqi in becoming a international trade center. Lastly, the author's ideas and suggestions are presented on how to make Urumqi a modernized international trade center through fully utilizing the superiorities and conquering the inferiorities. The author's valuable suggestion is: "The trade center should embody the ethnic characteristics . For that it should combine ehnic architectural style with the up-to-date techniques. And at the same time, it should promote the progress of minority's catering trade, and boost the development of Xinjiang minorities" production and local characteristic production, thereby let Urumqi become a modernized international city with full ethnic "characteristics".
