Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) is one of the most influential composers in the 20th century. He has become a notable composer in the modern music with its unique composing techniques and personalized sound. His unique musical notion and rigorously logical music language earns in his works an important position in the 20th century music repertory.The Symphony No.3, as one of Lutoslawski's representative later works, won biennial Grawemeyer Award of Music Composition in 1985. This work embodies Lutoslawski's late composing style. Moreover, the composer took timbre-sound structure as key factors in this work, which play a vital role in the layout of the whole structure. Therefore, considering the timbre-acoustics structure in this work as structure factors, this work has very important research value.This paper is divided into two parts. The first part not only outlines the composer's life, and different periods of his music composition, but also analyze the composing background of the Symphony No.3 and main composition techniques. The other part, as main part of this article, does systematic investigation into the orchestra and audio resources, the processing technology on timbre, the layout of orchestration, and other aspects of this work via specific case analysis. In the end, based on the above analysis, the article makes a general summary on the timbre-acoustics structure in the structure of Symphony No.3.
