As Jane Austen's masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice is greatly appreciated by the readers all around the world and has a great influence on the world literature. The novel is impressively dramatized under the pen of Austen, with exquisite, witty and humorous language, especially in conversations. Because of the rich resources of conversation provided by this novel, this thesis analyzes the characters'utterances from Leech's Politeness Principle and makes the readers better understand it. In this way, people can establish and maintain a harmonious relationship by appropriately using Politeness Principle in their daily communication.The realization of Politeness Principle is subject to the specific culture. The ways of showing politeness differ from culture to culture. The most worth-mentioning Chinese scholar in this area is Gu Yueguo. His politeness maxims are in fact the combination of Leech's Politeness Principle with Chinese traditional culture. The comprehensive understanding of Leech's Politeness Principle is helpful for us to understand Gu Yueguo's politeness maxims more thoroughly, to use politeness principles more appropriately in cross-cultural communication and to avoid unnecessary misunderstanding and embarrassment.
