"Loanwords", also"borrowings", have appeared in Chinese language since Han and Tang Dynasties. Language, a very important communicating tool and cultural vehicle, is interdependent on and interactive to the society: social changes give rise to linguistic changes. During the process of Chinese language developing history, a large number of loanwords fuse in Chinese and amplify her vocabulary, bringing her new information and broadening her horizon. What's more, loanwords are of promoter function to communications and social development in China. Translation is the only way for Chinese language to borrow loanwords from other languages. New words are brought in thick and fast with social development and advance of science and technology. Many new items and notions are introduced in with China's cumulative foreign communications which leads to modern loanwords inburst from English. Moreover, loanwords translation is becoming a subject of theoretical value and practical significance.Translation and culture can never be split, and translation is a way to explain culture. This thesis considers that cultural and social as well as linguistic factors influence loanwords translation. Successful language transformation requires a translator to be bilingualism and biculturalism (Hatim 223);"For truly successful translating, biculturalism is even more important than bilingualism, since words only have meanings in terms of the cultures in which they function."(Nida 2001, 82). Translation study is in fact a cultural interactive study inseparable from culture and psychology. Putting forth cultural turn in translation better achieves the formal and functional equivalence between the translation and the original words from the prospect of intercultural communication. This thesis, applying the theory combining cultural turn and studying the translation of loanwords in Chinese from English, from a new comprehensive and scientific angle, makes a systematic research in modern Chinese. And it combines the understanding of cultural translation to meaning and function with several main translation methods of loanwords, pure transliteration, transcription, partial transliteration plus partial transcription, zero translation, and points out that translating loanwords from English is a dynamic changing process controlled by regulations of Chinese language.
