| New History of the Five Dynasties, which was originally called The Five Dynasties'History, has been the only private amendment history since the Tang Dynasty. New History of the Five Dynasties has been written and narrated in a brief and vivid way.At present, relevant research on New History of the Five Dynasties is mainly devoted to explaining its words, and discriminating true ideas from false ones as well on the basis of historical materials. Despite this, particular research has been rarely dealt with from the perspective of modern lexicology. For example, monograph on its words seems not available. For these reasons, an intensive analysis and exploration of the vocabulary of New History of the Five Dynasties can shed more light on further study on the Chinese lexicology.The thesis consists of five sections. The first introduces the present study, such as the background information and social position of Ouyang Xiu, the writer of New History of the Five Dynasties. Also, the importance of New History of the Five Dynasties and the major gaps identified in current literature are provided with the aim to explain the author's determination to conduct the present study. The second deals with word-formation of polysyllabic words in New History of the Five Dynasties on the basis of the characteristics of word-formation associated with polysyllabic words, which lead to the author's conclusion that the word-formation via grammar plays an important role. The third try to analyze all the words of New History of the Five Dynasties and give out a main feature of vocabulary. The fourth is concerned with a discussion on the relationship between New History of the Five Dynasties and Chinese Dictionary. In what follows, a summary of the general characteristics identified in New History of the Five Dynasties is provided. |
