With rapid development of China's economy, foreign language majors are expected to have a better acquisition of abilities and knowledge structure in today's society. The foreign language teaching in vocational education gives priority to cultivating students'language proficiency. Therefore, foreign language teachers should not only help students acquire foreign language knowledge but cultivate their communicative skills.Foreign language teaching methodology has a long history and it plays a very important role in today's foreign language teaching reform. Foreign language teaching methodology has a lot of schools, and it is difficult for the foreign language teachers to select an effective one among them to develop the students'potential to the greatest limit. In fact, we can know that every teaching methodology has its strengths and weaknesses after analyzing them carefully. So, it is not appropriate for us to claim firmly for a certain one. We should learn the benefits wildly from every school according to our foreign language teaching reality. We must adapt to different method according to the different stages, the different teaching objects and the different teaching requests. It requires every excellent foreign language teacher should be fully aware of foreign language teaching methodology and can make the most of it fluently to improve the teaching level.The teachers should explore and develop their unique teaching model based on their own teaching experiences. Based on the training objectives of vocational college students and the tasks of the current German language teaching in our country, it is found that translating teaching mixed with communicative teaching is an efficient teaching model fit for German language teaching in vocational college. Translating teaching method emphasizes grammar learning to deepen students'understanding of target language, but the importance of students'language skills training is neglected, which leads to students'poor communicative skills. However, communicative teaching method puts emphasis on fostering students'communicative abilities, which is the objective of language training. Because of the difficulty in tackling the relationship between communicative skill and basic language knowledge like grammar, this method is demanding and difficult for teachers to conduct. Therefore these two methods should be combined in foreign language teaching in vocational college.The paper describes, compares and analyzes two typical teaching methods, traditional translation method and communicative approach and proposes comprehensive teaching method unifying traditional and the modern teaching law based on the present situation in German language teaching in vocational school. The purpose of this paper is to discover the relative strengths and weaknesses of both translating and communicative teaching methods and to apply them in vocational foreign language teaching. The implication of this research is that the combination of these two methods in accordance with the current situation of German language teaching is feasible and effective in practice. This paper takes German majors in Shandong Youth College as an example by the way of questionnaire and individual interview to make conclusion and put forward thoughts and suggestions on the combination of these two methods.
