Grammar-translation Method has been used for a long time in many countries, but it is now considered as an out-of-date and unreasonable method by some foreign language researchers and teachers both at home and abroad. A lot of argument about the Grammar-translation Method has happened, for its much more focus on grammar ability. Indeed, it seems that the Grammar-translation Method alone fails to meet the social demands on students of a foreign language because of it lack in the area of communication and speaking. However the Grammar-translation Method is still used by many teachers in a lot of schools in our country.As we all know, the existence of every teaching method has its special background under special conditions, so has the Grammar-Translation Method. In this paper, I introduced the historical background of the Grammar-Translation Method at first, and then explained its current status, the characters, the advantage and the disadvantage. Although it has a lot of limitations, I consider that it still can be used in our country after some improvement.On the basis of the analysis of the historical background and the status quo of Grammar-translation Method and in consideration of China's context, this paper proposes an improved Method for English teaching in China's secondary technical schools.
