This thesis aims to study the pragmatic functions of discourse marker well and its translation in Uncle Tom's Cabin from the perspective of pragmatics. Through the analysis, the author intends to prove that discourse marker well is translatable and propose that pragmatic translation is a practical way to translate it and other discourse markers as well.Pragmatics has been applied into translation area and it provides us with a new perspective for translation studies. Pragmatic approaches to translation studies attempt to explain the procedure, process and product of translation, from the point of view of what is done by the original author, what is done in the translation as a response to the original, how and why it is done in that way in that context.Translation is a kind of interlingual communication process, in which the translator who works as a bridge between the writer and the reader. To fully transfer the original text's meaning, the term "pragmatic equivalence" has been proposed, which means the reader of the target text should get the same meaning as the reader of the source text. From the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin,36 examples are collected which show the different pragmatic functions of discourse marker well. The relevant translations of these examples are also gathered from two Chinese versions. Through systematic analysis of its pragmatic functions and its relevant translation from the perspective of pragmatics, the author finds that pragmatic translation is applicable to the translation of discourse marker well and other discourse markers as well.Although this thesis is confined to the discourse marker well in a single novel, the research can also benefit the pragmatic study of the translation of other discourse markers.
