As a novel based on the social realities of the early19thcentury, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, writtenby the American writer Harriet Beech Stowe (1811-1896, known as Mrs. Stowe), caused a sensationin the United States when it was published. As an epoch-making social novel, it plays a veryimportant role as progressive literature during the core time of the political improvement inAmerica.Through appreciative comments, this thesis tries to understand the affection and action it stirs,and show the standard and taste of American society at that time. At first, this thesis makes asummary of the background of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the history, the culture, the politics and society atthat time. Then, through cultural comment on it, this thesis describes the emotional power of familyand female to perfect and shows its true understanding of this realistic works. This thesis alsointroduces the family and personal power source of Mrs. Stowe, and shows the special politicalintention the author planted in the works, and perfectly proves the realistic style of the works.Many well-known works emerged during the period of the development of American economyin the19thcentury. And Uncle Tom’s Cabin is one of them. This works got great frompoliticians and writers, such as Abraham Lincoln (1809-1964), the16thpresident ofAmerica, he claimed this book as “a book that started a great war” when he met withMrs. Stowe in the White House in1862. Emerson (1803-1882) said this works could help peopleof the world understand America. Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) implied that it valued higher than bothAnna Karenina and War and Peace. Langston Hughes (1902-1967), the famous black poet ofAmerican, he claimed this book as “a declaration of freedom at moral level” in the1950’s. As a pioneering novel in American literature history, the racial problemsshowed in Uncle Tom’s Cabin are still bothering the American society in different ways.Although there are already many articles researching on Uncle Tom’s Cabin, fewof them has deep research on its literary character. This article tries to do ananalysis of the context, the literature, the cultural elements and the artisticpresentation of this novel, and fatherly points out that its literary character playsthe same important role for the success of this novel.At present, China is at its period of economy development, while the Chinese literature is farfrom satisfaction for few excellent works is created. The Chinese political system and social development are at their transit period, how to reform to provide a healthy political environment;through thinking of the influence of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, this article shows that good literature workscan help improve a positive process of political reform and social development.
