A Study On The English Translation Of National Government Work Report From The Perspective Of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory

This paper firstly gives a comprehensive introduction to current research on Government Work Report translation in China. Many translation scholars and postgraduates have already studied on the English translation of national Government Work Report. However, a great majority of the scholars only focus on translating some concrete words, phrases or sentences and propose several certain translation skills and strategies, lacking a guiding theory. Only a few postgraduates probe into Government Work Report translation on the basis of Nida's functional equivalence theory. As a result, the author believes that it needs to be further investigated by applying functional equivalence to national Government Work Report translation.Then, this thesis summarizes the distinctive features of national Government Work Report and analyzes the existing problems in the English translation of national Government Work Report. Based on deep research on Nida's functional equivalence theory, the author carries out an analysis of national Government Work Report translation from 2006 to 2008 at lexical, syntactic and textual level. The research findings show that functional equivalence theory can be an appropriate and useful guidance in national Government Work Report translation, for it can make the translated text achieve the closest natural equivalent to the original text.In conclusion, the author proves that it has great feasibility of analyzing national Government Work Report translation in light of functional equivalence theory. The paper not only introduces a useful guiding theory in the English translation of national Government Work Report, but also elaborates the application of Nida's functional equivalence theory.
