Style refers to the general expressions or broad forms of genre (form markers); it also refers to the specific spirit, temperament, and charm of one literary work (non-formal markers) which could differ one piece of writing from others. What's more, the realization of the non-formal markers is totally based on the form markers. To a certain degree, style is the main symbol of artistic maturity for writers, and each writer has his own unique style. It is no exaggeration to say that the literary works passed from the ancient times are all known for their unique style.Because of the vagueness and inconsistency of style, the study of it has been controversial and complicated. Therefore, stylistic translation is always the tough nut during the process of translation. However, style is the key factor which could identify one writer's writings from others. It is quite necessary to render the style of the original works in target languages.Li Bai, one of the most outstanding poets in Tang Dynasty, left us nearly more than 900 immortal poems, which made a profound impact on the present. Li Bai's poems are full of power and grandeur with lively and exaggerated fancy, beautiful and natural language, and melodious and changeful meters. Meanwhile, his poems are rich in content, from concerning with affairs of state, showing contempt for men in power, sympathizing with the common people, depositing feeling to mountains and rivers to praising love and friendship.Li Bai and his poetry have been studied numerously by many scholars at home and abroad. And Li Bai's poems have been translated into English, French, Japanese, and Russia and other languages and there are many splendid and great versions among them. The author has carefully read many different English versions of Li Bai's poetry and found that the English version of Li Bai's poetry translated by different translators have different features. However, the author also found that they have lost the original style of Li Bai's poetry more or less. From the author's point of view, a good translation could still tell the readers obviously that they are reading Li Bai even if some creation is made.Liu Miqing's theory of stylistic translation provides us with a comparatively scientific approach to the stylistic translation. In this thesis, the author conducts a preliminary study on the English translation of the style of Li Bai's poetry based on the previous study from the perspective of Liu Miqing's Stylistic Translation Theory. This thesis aims to find available methods to render the original style in the process of stylistic translation. |
