As a master of pragmatism, Dewey paid great attention to science in his life, and there are many profound and unique discourses. But basically, Dewey's view of science is instrumentalism.Dewey believed that the concept of science, scientific theory, or scientific knowledge is neither an objective description of objective reality outside human nor objective truth. Scientific concept or theory in general is the operation. Only in the operating sense, meaningful scientific concept or theory can be understood, to be confirmed. As a tool of science, the distinction itself is not bad also. Science in different periods can only be compared by the effectiveness in the specific situation.Scientific theory is to operate, even the scientific method is to operate. Dewey believes that both the narrow way, or the generalized method, and only people are the tools to cope with the environment. Fundamentally speaking, thinking is a tool to cope with the environment. Tools only facilitate the convenient, practical and non practical and effective not effective, there is no non-true and false questions. Dewey advocated the scientific method applied to the social sciences to become a tool for social progress. Human pursuit of science, the use of the development of science is in fact pursuing, application and development of a tool. The value of science is that it's a tool.Starting from the instrumentalism of Dewey, the development of the use of scientific optimism, which our development of science, with science to improve the livelihood of the people is positive, but completely deny the science of objective truth, on our correct understanding of the nature of science may have negative impact .
