The Evolution Of Enlightening Modernity And Aesthetic Modernity

China's modernist literary theory has appeared in an embryonic form as early as the start of 20th century, which drew the prologue of introducing and researching western modern literary theories and aesthetics. By researching into the acceptance and development of western modernity in China, we can get a thorough understanding of the modernity of China's modernist literary theories. From the two dimensionalities of modernity:enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity, we can give a profound and unique illumination of China's modernist literary theories. The modernist literary theories of China and the west are linked by specific conditions with specific experience. The tangible state of China's enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity is different from their logical significance, and different from the western modernity which demonstrates fierce confrontation. Instead, China's enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity developed side by side. During the middle of 20th century, China's modernist literary theories showed a strong sense of enlightening modernity, revealing a certain features of aesthetic modernity in translation and introduction. During 1980s, China's modernist literary theory went through a complex evolution from a stage when aesthetic modernity was overwhelmed by upgrding modernity to a stage when both developed in a coordinated manner, and finally to the stage that aesthetic modernity got the better of enlightening modernity.In this thesis, the analysis of value orientation of China's modernist literary theory at the 1980s is combined with the analysis of enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity. The evolution of relationship between enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity, which will be viewed from the perspective of modern transformation of China's modernist literary theory at the 1980s, and will in turn be used to study the China's modernist literary theory at the 1980s. For the establishing of a broad frame of reference system,this article first explains the concept of modernity to the normative nature sense of modern, enlightening modernity, aesthetic modernity; the macro modern Chinese literary acceptance, overview of modern Chinese literary theories enlightening modernity, the aesthetic characteristics of modernity and its development process;The second part takes the 80 years of modern Chinese literary theory for example, starting at three levels of specific arguments.The thesis is divided into three stages:earlier stage (1979-1984) when enlightening modernity dominantly suppressed and hindered the development of aesthetic modernity which was beginning to emerge; middle stage (1985-1987) when aesthetic modernity developed while compromising and mingling with tradition; later stage (1988-1989) when aesthetic modernity took a leading role in China's modernist literary theory and exhibited an attitude of banishing the practice reason of enlightening morality. By then, the autonomy of literary was fully realized. However, the Chinese modernist literary theoryies can not be determined pure text analysis.The new pattern formation need a profound reflection on 80 years modernist literary theory.The third part makes reflections on the 80's modernist literary theories:The undue emphasis and arbitrary development of a value judging model is restricted to limited part of literary activities, which will finally results in an insular and unbalanced literary value concept considering how to deal with the relationship between theories and localization under present context of globalization by interpreting and reflecting China's modernist literary theory of 1980s. Under multi-dimensional literature pattern, what kind of value judgment, discourse model and aesthetic quality shall literary theories and criticisms establish? How should we deal with enlightenment and aesthetics, sensibility and rationality to maintain a significant development for literary theories and criticisms in modernity? Under multi-dimensional literature pattern of modern society, for the purpose of helping literature and literary theories avoid antinomy of sensibility arid rationality, literary theories and criticisms need to build a multidimensional and compatible pattern; for value judgment, discourse model and aesthetic quality is based on the medium of aesthetics. The pattern shall coordinate the relationship between sensibility, rationality, and divinity.
