Feminism Film in the West is a specific concept and is closely linked by the feminist movement advocating women's independence which is considerably associated with politics. As tools for feminists'critiques of the existing system, this kind of film has been the most significant features of feminism films. Since the development of Feminism Film in western world is much more mature than in China. The Piano, directed and edited by a New Zealand female director, Jane Campion, which is one of the representative works of western Feminism Film, has been regarded as a masterpiece of reflecting the female awareness for its skillful and delicate description of female inner feelings. However, for China, the Feminism Film is not made under the guidance of contemporary feminism theory. To some extent, the female awareness reflected in the Chinese Feminism Film was born indeed naturally. Woman ? Demon ? Human directed by Huang Shuqin is the first film that made a thorough analysis in an introspective way to describe the women's social life and inner world through her skilled camera language and profound understanding of the reality. This film has been approved to be the most mature Feminism Film which won the awarded by the domestic and oversea Feminism Film experts and critics.Based on the comparative research of Chinese and Western feminism films which have won several international awards, Woman·Demon·Human and The Piano, this thesis tries to find out the different and similar aspects of the two films in the female consciousness, female characters and utilization of feminism theories. Moreover, from the feminism perspective, this thesis applied methods of perusing text, individual case study and comparative criticism analysis to find certain theoretical guideline and creative method for improvement of the future Chinese feminism films. There are four parts in the thesis:Chapter I: The development characteristics of the Chinese and Western Feminism Film is briefly introduced. This chapter also summarizes the story of two films Woman·Demon·Human and The Piano, and proposed new perspectives and research ideas of this thesis.Chapter II: With the methods of text perusal and arrangement of montage, two films Woman·Demon·Human and The Piano particularly analyzed in detail. The feminism consciousness is compared in these two films through the different narrative structure, plot arrangement and characteristics of camera language.Chapter III: In order to find certain characteristics of the Chinese and Western feminism films, this chapter provides a comparative research of the two major female-Qiu Yun and Ada- characters' behavior in different status in society, family and the relationship between female and male.Chapter IV: A comparative research is provided in the film structure, characters, and methods of artistic creation, narrative core and experiences of the two different female directors. This chapter also provides suggestions for the improvement of the future Chinese feminism films and points out drawbacks of the thesis.
