On The Context And Translation In Cross-cultural Communications

With the development of society, the cultural exchanges between China and western countries become more frequent. Many western works have been translated into Chinese. However, the author has read some of the translations and found there are mistakes, such as mistranslation,dead translation,over-translation and random translation. Through careful comparison, the author figures that one of main reasons is the ignorance of"context"in the process of translation.Translation, depending on original context, creates target context to meet specific needs of communications. Therefore, a translator must take the context into full consideration when he translates. With the aid of CAT software and adopting some traditional translation methods, such as foreignization,domestication, addition, division, the author firstly translates a work of religion which is not translated by others and unfamiliar to the Chinese reader, and makes continuous modifications to perfect it. At last, the author makes a comparative study of the examples of good translations and mistranslations based on the theory of Context. It is suggested that in the translating process, the translator should follow the principle of"correct understanding and right expression".Combining theory and practice, this paper tries to prove that the"context"always works during the course of comprehension and expression. I hope it can shed some new light on future translation practice and translation researches.
