R&B (i.e. rhythm & amp or rhythm & blues, which are the abbreviation for rhythm andblues), as a musical genre which was popular in the forties of last century, was developed andcreated on the basis of some musical-related materials concerning blues as well as jazz by theAfrican Americans. In the early developing period, it was regarded as the racial music by theblack people because of its own rhythmic characteristic, and meanwhile, it was also widelyaccepted by the whites. R&B was the essential foundation of rock and roll, and it also playedan extremely crucial role in the history of American pop music. Since the forties of twentiethcentury, R&B had involved large numbers of musical genres, including urban, funk and discoetc throughout more than half a century. Nowadays, it has already become the leading powerof the pop music. In this paper, it will take the African Americans as a study object, exploringthe characteristic of blues in different developing stages through the study of the stylistic andcultural feature in the foundation of grasping large quantities of the relating studies both fromhome and abroad. By the analysis of the early period style originality, development andartistic feature in blues, tightly integrating the social and cultural background of the UnitedStates, the article will study rhythm and blues by putting it into the cultural dimension at thattime, in that sense, we will cognize it more comprehensively and accurately. This thesisdiscusses and analyzes the R&B's influence and function on both Chinese modern pop musicand pop music circles.
