The seal characters in the tops of tablets of East Han Dynasty reached their peak in art,representing the achievements of zhuane-- seal characters in the tops of tablets. The peculiarities of zhuane of East Han Dynasty characterized by the variety in calligraphy style, the beauty and the strong decoration showed great differences with other seal characters carved in the tablets of all other ancient Chinese dynasties.The dissertation intends to reveal the characteristics of calligraphy itself, of the style, of the wringting forms and of that era about the zhuane of East Han and tries to bring the possible readers some enlightenment in their practice and creation with seal characters, by comparing the character contexts and the value in calligraphy of the tablet tops with the other kinds of art of the same era. The main research methods used in this dissertation are discussion, comparison and diagram illustration which give proofs to the value, the sense of the calligraphy of the tablet tops to let known the art, docration and uniqueness by using nessecisary graph data.It consists of six chapters: Chapter 1 is a brief survey of zhuane of East Han Dynasty; Chapter 2 lists the main styles of zhuane of East Han Dynasty and analyzes the representative tablets of zhuane of East Han Dynasty. The main purpose of this chapter is comparing the research achievements of the modern scholars on this subject who sorted the zhuane of East Han Dynasty according to their styles, and then raises a discussion about each tablet of zhuane of that period. A detailed anlysis of each tablet follows after. Chapter 3 explores the art characteristics of zhuane of East Han Dynasty from the variety of such zhuane. Four features are mentioned: 1. Zhuane were the continual of the seal characters of Qin Dynasty; 2.They had the typical styles --- mixture of seal characters and the official script; 3. They were unique by borrowing natural images; 4. They also embodied the styles with shushu and miaozhuan. Chapter 4 is a comparison between zhuane of East Han Dynasty and the stone inscriptions such as the seal characters of Qin, of Han and of Tang Dynasties. Chapter 5 is the key part of this dissertation, studying on the enlightenment of the zhuane of East Han Dynasty to the scholars of Qing Dynasty (DengShiru, WuRangzhi, ZhaoZhiqian and WuChangshuo, etc.). Chapter 6 discloses the relation between zhuane of East Han Dynasty and seal cutting. This chapter provides proofs for the mutual relationship between seal cutting and zhuane, and the influence on the seal cutting factions of Qing Dynasty with the theory"seal-cutting comes from calligraphy". In the closing words, a summary of the mentioned six chapters is given.The value of the zhuane of East Han Dynasty is even of very great importance today. This dissertation intends to fully display the values of the zhuane of East Han Dynasty and attracts the people's attention to the zhuane in their creation of seal characters.The creative point of this dissernation is mainly the systematic sort of and the discussion on the calligraphy of zhuane of East Han Dynasty with a throughout analysis of the value of zhuane of that time and the affluences they left on the seal chararters and the creation in seal characters in Qing Dynasty. It is the value persuit for the dissernation to make the value of the zhuane of East Han known to the greatest degree so that people who later study calligraphy can lay stress on the value of zhuane of Han Dynasty.
