Overseas Transmission Of Chinese Culture-Lin Yutang's Cultural Translation

As a way for the communication of different cultures, translation plays a very significant role in the contemporary Globalized society. And meanwhile, people's understanding about translation has also changed from the technical language transmission to the exchange and communication through different cultures. Under this circumstances, how to promote Chinese culture through translation has drawn a lot of researchers' attention. However, most of these researches focus on introducing the relationship between cultural transmission and translation from a macro point of view. The researches on cultural transmission based on the analysis of case study of translation are actually rare. This thesis takes Lin Yutang, the famous translator in the cultural communication field, as an example, and analyzes his translation theories and works from various angles in order to discover some inspiration for the overseas transmission of Chinese culture.Lin Yutang is a world-renowned writer, translator, and scholar in the 20th century. He went to the US in the 1930s, and during the next half century, he kept on introducing Chinese culture to the westerners, or vise versa. Besides his translated works, his English literary works are famous for the cultural translation as well.As a writer and a scholar, Lin's literary works are wonderful. His cultural translation, which reflects his own poetic ideas and ideology, is very unique from others'. He transmitted his understanding about Chinese philosophy, history and religion through the cultural translation in his literary works. This special and unique part made a great influence on the western audiences. As a translator, he links up theory with practice. Besides many transled works, he gave his criteria of translation through his masterpiece of translation, On Translation. He not only followed his own translation criteria ("faithfulness", "expressiveness" and "elegance"), but also paid much attention to the audience environment. His success, which has the function of inspiration for the overseas transmission of Chinese culture, deserves the in-depth research.This thesis, based on the cultural translation of his Chinese-English translated works, his English literary works and his thinking of translation theory, analyzes Lin's cultural translation practice from different angles. And eventually we try to get the inspiration for the overseas transmission of Chinese culture.As for the analysis, on the one hand, with the manipulation theory as the theoretical frame, we try to discover how Lin chooses the translated texts and how he works as both a writer and a translator; On the other hand, in the light of his own reflection of translation theory, we analyze his translated works from the criteria of "faithfulness", "expressiveness" and "elegance" which were proposed by himself. Finally, in the field of cultural transmission, we will discuss how he works with consideration of the target audiences and the target environment. And we will discover how to promote the contemporary overseas transmission of Chinese culture with the flexible strategies in the advantageous globalized world. Hopefully our work could trigger the thorough thinking on the cultural development in the contemporary world.The conclusion discusses the theoretical significance and the practice value as well as the deficiencies in this research, and meanwhile proposes the possible space for the further research.
