This article makes the dynamic research on the popular novels in ancient China which are put in the historical perpetual flow,and reveals the development of aesthetic ideas of the popular novels in ancient China. The full text is divided into four parts.The first part establishes the starting point and the characteristics of popular novels.and illustrates the current research in this subject and significance. The second part analyzes those aesthetic elements about the popular novels:the daily life hidden and presented; changes in narration and characterization. Such changes are related to the contradictory relationship between publicity and individuality.The third part takes the different function and aesthetic ideals at various stages as clue and also contains three aspects. In the first place the entertainment function is primary,and the novels cater to the common's esthetic ideal. In the second place expressing and exhortation are sressed and the novels display esthetic ideal which is shaped under the action of mass and creative force. Thirdly self-expression becomes major function and the novels highlight the aesthetic ideal of the authors. This clue is linked together closely with the relationship between publicity and individuality. The article concludes with a brief description of academic gain learned from research process briefly.
