On The Phenomenon Of Nominalization In EST Discourse

Nominalization is an important concept of linguistics and it is also a common phenomenon in language. Development of science and technology for a country plays a pivotal role, so we have to use English for Science and Technology (EST) as a tool to learn more advanced science and technology all over the world. Through lots of reading, we found that there is a lot of Nominalization in EST discourse. Due to these Nominalizations, EST discourse is more objective and technical. How to show objective fact by nominalization also demonstrated the key of understanding EST. At present, scholars have studied from many different angles, but their research is lacking of systematic and in-depth study.In this paper, the study is based on EST discourses. First, it gives different definitions of EST discourse, nominalizations and classification of nominalization. Then with these theories, this thesis focuses on its formations, usage and functions in EST discourse.Through research, EST discourses provide places for nominalization. No matter the changes of the verb noun or adjective make them lose their original features and add features of noun. All features of noun serve for the whole discourse. The structure of nominalization also can hide a lot of components, which can make the text look more accurate and objective. It is believed that a better understanding of nominalized processes in EST can facilitate learner's understanding of EST discourse.
