The translation of imagery is an essential part of poetry translation. As some western countries border on the sea, their civilization is endowed with the characteristics of the sea, which leads to the rich symbolic meanings of the sea. Compared with western countries, although China is also close to the sea, it is an inland country on the whole and Chinese culture originates from Yellow River. Therefore, Chinese readers'imagination to the sea is different from that of the westerners. Naturally, the translation of sea-image in English poetry becomes the key point of transferring the emotion of original poems related to the sea.The thesis first in retrospect summarizes the research on the concept of "imagery" in Chinese and western criticism, the translation of poetic image, and states the relationship between imagery and symbol. After combing the symbolic meanings of sea-image, the paper divides it to the archetypal symbolic meanings and modern symbolic meanings. At last, the thesis finds out the relevance between original poetry and the translation from the perspective of relevance theory and digs out the connotation of sea-image in poetry translation.
