The purpose of this study was to investigates the effect and feasibility of multidimensional rubrics in music performance assessment, and to discuss attitudes and perceptions of teachers and students. This study mainly applied quantitative and qualitative research methods. The subjects contained eight piano teachers and 39 undergraduates music-majors in ShangHai. The research tool was developed at "Multidimensional Rubric in Music Performance Assessment".Its content consisted of:(1) the overall of the piano performance (2) the accuracy of skills for performing (3) the degree of grasping musical elements in the process of performance (4) the interpretation about the music work(5) the different between the performance at the jury and the studio situation.Through the pilot-study,content validity and reliability analysis the data were collected and analyzed. The results indicated:1.Multidimensional assessment rubric scale,as a tool of a learning assessment on piano performance,is feasible, but the setting of dimensions, levels and score ratings are based onactual referee, object and the key point.2.Using variance analysis, the total dimensions of Multidimensional assessment rubric shows significant differences.3.In comparison among different fractal dimensions, both the high score group and low group get high score in the degree of difficulty of work and score accuracy, but both getting the lowest score is different.4. The composite score from multidimensional assessment rubric are positively correlated to the spot level, but the level is not high level. That is to say, it is not true that for piano students, the best in performance, the highest scores they get on the spot level.5.Multidimensional assessment rubric scale and the method of teachers'direct assessment lead to stark difference in students'scores.6.84% of students feel that the multidimensional assessment rubric scale is conducive to their piano learning. Teachers also think there is relationship between the piano learning and assessment method and can promote students to learn piano. According to the findings of the study, made recommendations to the piano teachers, assessment method of piano performance, and student teaching in the future.
