The Nostalgia Of Wangshuo

Since become a writer in the 1980's of last century, Wangshuo has been the center of public opinions for years. Being a rogue to show his brilliant talent, then involving himself into the film and TV circles as a scenarist as well as making comment on culture or passing judgment on celebrities, even studying Buddhist Scriptures carefully, he always attracts the public. As a cultural and literary phenomenon, Wangshuo's writing was discussed mainly in the field of "Anti-Utopia" or "Commercial Culture". Based on the novels and some of the films that adapted from his novels, this dissertation chooses "Nostalgia" to analyze his works,combining them with the sentimental feelings of him, trying to make a wider and deeper understanding of his works and life. The dissertation will set up a system of his nostalgia by constructing the relationship between nostalgia and him in order to respond to the comment on him in last twenty years while explaining the difficulties and changes in his late writing. Besides, the dissertation will elucidate the social meanings of nostalgia in nowadays.Foreword introduces the social background and literary situation of 1980's, enumerating the research achievements on the characters and language styles of his novels while illustrating the reasonable existence of nostalgia and the analytic ways of Wangshuo's novels by contrast with the writing experience of him. Through the theoretical explanation, the dissertation tries to establish the relationship between Wangshuo and nostalgia effectively.First Chapter focuses on the early works of Wangshuo,displaying the stubborn and obstreperous behaviors and rebellious characteristics of the rogues while revealing their experience as losers in order to analyze the language styles as a literary strategy.Second Chapter mainly analyzes the nostalgia system of teenagers of Wangshuo's novels such as "DongWuXiongMeng" and the film that adapted from it, "In the Heat of the Sun", establishing the system from three dimensions-physical space, emotional structure and narrative methods, showing the influence of the courtyard, family and school as well as emphasizing the experience of privileged stratum including the superior feelings, the daily life and mental changes. Meanwhile, the dissertation sets up a narrative system that matching the physical space, revealing the ambiguous memory and authentic reality, providing the possibility for the nostalgia and pointing it out by the comparison of some other writers.Third Chapter is discussed under the modernism. Through the inquiries about the reasons and mental state of the nostalgia, try to deepen the proposition by combining the psychic trauma and the memories of Wangshuo. Then, expand it from the individual to the social dimension by the illustration of identity and collective memories.Conclusion sums up the nostalgia of Wangshuo, defining it as a temporary strategy that can alleviate the anxiety of people. Though it cannot fully solve the mental difficulties, it is a productive energy we cannot ignore. In the future, the nostalgia also has different possibilities, so we cannot easily estimate it now.
