Shanxi is the birthplace of Chinese civilization, with the reputation of the prosperity for five thousand years in China, and one of the best preserved areas of painted sculpture in China. A set of invaluable Buddhist painted sculptures are preserved in the Wan Fo Hall of Tran Quoc Pagoda which is in Hao Dong village located in the 15km north of Pingyao. These painted sculptures have been through a long history, but still kept the mien of painted sculptures in Five Dynasties. They are the masterpiece of painted sculptures in an early time of China, which are imbued with high artistic value and research value. After looking up related material, the author finds that scholars have done little researches on this aspect, and most of the achievements are only the brief introduction. There is no one professional thesis or monograph, and little studies on its artistic value.Although the professional achievements about painted sculptures have been mushroomed, the scholars have paid more attention to the Donghuang's painted sculptures, and the studies about other place have been in negligible quantity. Thus it is necessary to do the researches on the Shanxi's Buddhist painted sculptures. After the field survey to the Wan Fo Hall in Tran Quoc Pagoda of Pingyao, this thesis does a comparative study on the Shanxi's Buddhist painted sculptures from the horizontal and vertical through the typology and iconography in archaeology. The author examines the artistic style of painted sculptures in Wan Fo Hall of Tran Quoc Pagoda, analyzes their historical features and subjects, and verifies the inheritance of previous dynasty and linage aftertime. Finally, it is concluded that the painted sculptures in Wan Fo Hall of Tran Quoc Pagoda bear the obvious the characteristics of middle and late Tang dynasty, which provide the value material for the research on the Buddhist painted sculptures of Five Dynasty in China.The painted sculptures of Wan Fo Hall bear the high artistic, history and scientific value, and thus they should be noticed and protect by communities and related departments. The study on the painted sculptures of Wan Fo Hall In Tran Quoc Pagoda enriches the researches on the Buddhist painted sculptures, and affirms its value in Chinese ancient sculpture.
