Indonesia and China established good relationship a long time ago, especially in the fields of economy and culture, Due to the implementation of the"Independent Foreign Policy", Indonesia and China relationship grew deeper. As far as Indonesian people are concerned, The Chinese Languages has become one of the foreign languages one needs to learn. Chinese Languages Learning/Teaching in Indonesia began before Indonesia got independence. Today, Indonesian government has enacted a new education policy which requires all high schools in the country to open a foreign language teaching program. This policy makes English language a compulsory course, and Chinese, German, Japanese, French or Arabic an elective course.To facilitate this research, this Thesis is a based upon the historical point of view. It contains a review of the history of the different policy of different presidents on Indonesia's Chinese educational exchange program. An observation on the present situation of Chinese education, the problems that exist including the condition of Chinese language teacher, Learning Material, students and teaching method, etc, and proffers solutions to the problems.This thesis researches and analyzes the present condition of teaching Chinese in Indonesian high schools. On the one hands, this thesis helps a greater number of people to know the present situation of Chinese language learning/teaching in Indonesia. On the other hand, it suggests an effective plan for Chinese language education. Through this thesis, this researcher hopes to make teaching/learning Chinese language in Indonesian high schools more effective.
