A Comparative Study Of Translation Thoughts Of Guo Moruo And Yu Dafu

In the 1920s and 1930s, flourishing literary societies in China were devoted to literary translation as well as literary creation, making great contributions to the development of Chinese literature. As one important member, the Creation Society was established in Japan in 1921. Henceforth, the Creation Society was committed to systematically, purposefully and actively translating and introducing foreign literatures into China, which injected new elements and fresh vitality into Chinese literature and contributed its share for China's translation cause.Guo Moruo and Yu Dafu are key figures of the Creation Society. Compared with other members of the Creation Society, Guo Moruo and Yu Dafu wrote more essays on translation. For example, Guo Moruo put forward theories of"matchmaker","empathy","group translation"and"two steps of translation"and so on; while Yu Dafu brought forward requirements for translators,"Studying, Thinking, and Getting". Their translation thoughts enrich China's translation theories and can be learnt from to guide translation practice. Translation thoughts of Guo Moruo and Yu Dafu exert important influences on their contemporaries, later generations, and the translation cause of China. The comparative study of translation thoughts of Guo and Yu highlights their role as translators, and makes contributions to the studies of translators and translation history in China.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part, introduction, introduces translation activities in China in the 1920s and 1930s and the main translation activities of the Creation Society, sums up previous studies on Guo Moruo's and Yu Dafu's translation thoughts, and explains the research methodology, significance and purpose of this thesis. Chapter one deals with Guo Moruo as a translator, introducing his life experiences, his translation activities and his translation thoughts, and giving a brief analysis of typical parts of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle translated by Guo Moruo. Chapter two copes with Yu Dafu as a translator who has been ignored by scholars, introducing his life experiences, his translation activities and his translation thoughts, and analyzing his translation of Mary E. Wilkins'A New England Nun. Chapter three conducts a comparative analysis of Guo's and Yu's translation thoughts. The last part, conclusion, summarizes this thesis and affirms the significance of translation thoughts of Guo Moruo and Yu Dafu.
