In this paper, the control of the state over society in Southeast Guizhou Miao Area during Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasty is analyzed from a regional and social perspective. The aim is to investigate the imperial system in a borderland ethnic group and the complex interaction between the two, by analysing in depth thetraditional chinese concept of "Unification" (dayitong) and the relation between the imperial state, institutional arrangements and frontier communities.Before the inclusion of the southeast Guizhou Miao Area in the sinocentric system (huawai), the main mode of social control derived from its own traditional system. During Yongzheng dynasty,the main objective wasmaximazing the benefits from the aperture of "New Borders",accompanied by the stablishment of non imperial administrators (liuguan), creation of Local/Native Officials (tuguan), Green Flag Army, promulgation of law and taxes, education,…, which shaped the new patterns of social control. Under these new situation, the poor imperial infrastructures and institutional supply prompted the outbreak of chaos, leading to the Miao rebellion. The resulting conflict between the two.After settled the foundations of the "New Border", based on considerations of cost of control, the imperial state carried out geographical rearragement by economic development, legal regulation, increased military strength and political reconstruction, which acchieved good results.In the historical evolution of the southeast Guizhou during the Yongzheng and Qianlong era, the relation between the imperial state and ethnic groups fluctuated between reconciliation and conflict, driven by both sides fight for maximazing their benefits. Under the threat of confrontation, the imperial state institutional arrangements applied to ethnic groups spurred to promote both their own interests and reconciliation.
