Study On The Phenomenon Of Conversion Of Nouns And Verbs In Taiping Jing

Taiping Jing finished in late Eastern Han is the classical work of Taoist. The book is about Yin and Yang, the five elements, supernatural beings, ghosts, Taoist magic figures or incantations, feudal order of importance or seniority in human relationships, relieving the poor and so on, therefore its contents are multifarious and disorderly and opinions in it are various. The writers of Taiping Jing are all lower intellectuals and Taiping Jing is used to preach towards the numerous commons, so it contains a lot of spoken language and can truly reflect the case of the language at that time. Not difficult to see, Taiping Jing is of great value to studying language. Survey shows that there are a plenty of phenomena of conversion of nouns and verbs in Taiping Jing, and no one has made a systematic study on them, so we chose them as our studying object.Conversion of nouns and verbs is a language phenomenon that a noun is used as a verb and vice versa with directly meaning relations. Previous studies about this phenomenon have some disadvantages:some scholars mix it in the studying of the flexible application of parts of speech, some only study the phenomenon that a noun is used as a verb, there is no studying on conversion of nouns and verbs and so forth. In this thesis, the phenomena of conversion of nouns and verbs are studied in order to make up for these deficiencies.In the thesis, firstly define conversion of nouns and verbs and review the previous studies. Then set the criteria of language material selections, and select the nouns that are used as verbs and the verbs that are used as nouns in Taiping Jing. Next make a classification description and exhaustive statistic for the selection words. Finally sum up the features of the conversion of nouns and verbs in Taiping Jing.Through our investigation, we find:the conversion of nouns and verbs in Taiping Jing has a law that the conversion words reduce as the conversion frequency increases; two-syllable conversion words have three main characteristics:one is that the conversion proportion increases, the other is that the most of them are structures of coordination, the third is the conversions of them has a certain correspondence with the ones of their combining forms when they are used as words; there are some conversions of synonymous nouns and verbs; there are some conversion words with a high frequency and some with a low one; the conversion meanings of some conversion are rare in the other literatures; the original meanings and conversion meanings of some conversions are rare in the other literatures. These features are relation to the text of Taiping Jing and show that there is a deeper meaning basis in conversion of nouns and verbs.
