Functional Conversion In Compound Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives And The Unidirectional Advantage Of Metonymy

In recent year many linguists have analysised the phenomenon about conversion and functional conversion in mondern Chinese and they also have some important conclusions. Previous studies of the phenomenon have concentrated on two areas.The first one is how to judge whether the status of the linguistic unit has changed.Generally this mainly involves the syntactic position of the word-class;also which conversion about the function of the word-class has been happened.The other problem is what motivates conversion between theword-class and what mechanisms are responsible for it,which has been studied from functional grammar and cognitive Linguistics.Now With the emergence of cognitive linguistics and cognitive semantics,we will get many new point of view.This article is based on the forerunners and select the nouns, verbs and adjectives which is marked and classed in " Modern Chinese Dictionary" to explore the characteristics, motivation and mechanisms between their mutual conversion, and through the actual corpus to prove when they turn in one-way nature has inherent advantages and try to put forward a hypothesis about it. The article is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction which mainly introduce the purpose and meaning of the topics and the methods or theories which will be used and so on.The second chapter identifies the scope of notional study and points out that when we discuss the problem of functional conversion ,we should distinguish some boundaries such as Monosyllabics and Two-syllables or markness and unmarkness,which are different from compositions, forms and cognitive styles.Chapterâ…¢makes a preliminary description of the conversion between adjectives and verbs, nouns and verbs,and then makes a simple explanation to the motivation.It mainly facous on the unidirection in asymmetries in the categorial shift,pointing out the motivation about the asymmetries.Chapterâ…£especially expounds unidirection of the conversion between nouns and adjectives,considering that conversion between the nouns and adjectives is indirect.Between them, there exists the distinguishing words.Chapterâ…¤is the conclusion of the study,with description of the relevant issues...
