Since the 1940s the study of learning motivation has gradually been refined. A great deal of research shows that training and development are two of the main factors in determining learning motivation. English reading is one of the important aspects of studying English, so it is important for the educators to find ways as many as possible to initiate, active and improve learners'motivation, so as to help the learners learn faster and better. With the development of the theories regarding motivation develop, many factors have been discovered that influence motivation, including some key factors which have been shown to improve studying efficiency, enhance the effect of established methods, and to better enable learners to improve study ability, such as interest in studying, attitude toward studying, and self-esteem.Psychological research has shown that motivation is the driving force in determining learning habits, and has demonstrated the importance of internal motivation relative to external motivation. Researching the variable conditions affecting internal motivation means to find the optimal means for developing effective study, which is also the objective of this study. The research data was obtained through distributing of questionnaires and interviewing students. The questionnaires answered by 50 sophomores of English majors at Liaoning Normal University contained 25 items, and covered three aspects of motivation under study: interest in studying, attitude toward studying, and self-esteem. The students were randomly chosen to fill in the questionnaires, six of whom filled in the questionnaires while interviewed, evidence regarding these three factors was collected and analyzed so that interest in studying, attitude toward studying and self-esteem are factors that significantly affect the motivation for English reading, and the functions of these three factors affecting English reading was obtained through this analysis. Finally, the study of the functions of these three factors showed that they are closely correlated with each other. From data collected from the questionnaires, a great number of sample statistics analyses have been carried out by using SPSS. Based on the analyses, conclusions have been drawn that the students'motivation English reading is affected by three factors of study interest, study attitudes and the desire to realize self-values.In the process of language learning, it was the learner who played the dominant role. It was also the case in the reading process. Instead of being a passive receiver of information, the reader would exploit various factors to cope with information, covering cognitive factors and affective factors, among which motivation and language attitude were the essential part. Concerning the complexity of people's psychological process, it was very difficult to put the learners into one category of motivation. It is helpful for teachers to gain some insights into their motivation so as to know their psychological state involved in reading and promote reading proficiency. Through the analyses of data, a conclusion has been reached as to the factors that affect the motivation of English reading. Nothing is done to analyze how to improve the qualities of teaching of English reading. The combination of teachers, teaching environments and social cultural environments may promote the emergence of study motivation. More research should be done in this field. There should also be more analyses as to how the learners can better adjust themselves and their abilities. Researchers should consider the needs of the learners from multi-dimensional perspectives. Finally, two suggestions are hereby given to English teachers at Liaoning Normal University. One is that, educators should work to further improve students'ability to learn independently, and thereby increase student's motivation to read. The other is that, a variety of teaching methods should be used in order to foster students'self-esteem.
