The Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs in modern Chinese are used to express the opposition that comes from the speaker's subjective negation, including "倒"(dao),"反"(fan),"反倒"(fan dao)"倒反"(dao fan),"反而"(fan er),"倒是"(dao shi),"却" (que),"偏"(pian),"偏偏"(pian pian). There are slight differences between these Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs. This thesis is a study of these differences. It is composed of five parts that study three aspects of the Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs:1.The position of the Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs in the sentences of modern Chinese. There are two main sentence patterns in terms of the usage of these adverbs: "F reverse+NP+VP" and "NP+F reverse+VP".But the Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs are also easily found to be used together with each other. This thesis makes comparisons between "却反而" and"却...反而","却反"and"却...反","却偏偏"and "却...偏偏",aiming at discovering their differences.2.The pragmatic function of the Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs. In the real communication, because the Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs carry some feeling or emotion of the speaker, they have a color of subjectivity. We also study the focus and presupposition of these adverbs.Because of the characteristics of the Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs, there must be contrast in such a sentence, and then there comes reverse. So the focus of contrast of these adverbs is prominent.Behind the facial meaning of a Reverse-Exclamatory-Adverb sentence there is often something hidden, to find which needs logical reasoning and knowledge of the background.3.The semantic elements of The Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs in modern Chinese. We divide the semantic elements of The Reverse Exclamatory Adverbs into five categories. These elements seldom co-exist in a sentence. But some semantic elements are hidden in the sentence, which accords with the principle of economy of language and can explain the reasonability of the presupposition.
