Yugur The World Of Music

With its unique historic and artistic attract, Yugur folk music has caused extensive attention. Numerous researchers have indulged themselves in studies on its history, language, anthropologic and cultural character, especially in comparative studies. Their research results have largely helped protection and promotion of Yugur culture and its traditional music. As agreed by most researchers, an art form has to communicate with the outside world, in order to survive and to grow stronger. Conservation without adaptation only lead to fatal loss. Therefore, this article focuses on how to find effective methods to enhance the inheritance in community, communication with the other cultural group and spread abroad.This article studies and analyzes towards the protection of ethnic music. It is divided into five parts, respectively investigates the characteristics of Yugur music, its historic evolution, current status in the modern society, and suggestions of its protection and further develpment.The first part introduces the research background. It summarizes the history of Yugur research, including the researches of Yugur history, culture and the traditional folk music; and then introduces the subject and significance of this paper.The second part is a general introduction of Yugur autonomous region, Yugur history and its culture, particularly of its folk music. As each ethnic culture is greatly related to its inhabitation, economic structure, and its cultural identity, before starting analysis the artistic character of Yugur folk music, it is necessary to study its cultural foundation from the above mentioned various aspects.The third part mainly involves the evolution and spread of Yugur folk music. First, it concludes the four different ways how Yugur folk music is passed down from generation to generation. Then is a detailed introduction of its modern development, including researches, new folk music creation, government supports and successful examples of Yugur singers.The fourth part studies the status of Yugur music in the trend of modernization, urbanization and cultural diversity. It analyzes the fast changing natural and social environment and its influences on the survival of Yugur folk music from three major aspects: natural, economical and cultural.Base on the above analysis, the last parts discusses about how to protect and develop Yugur folk music. In the past researches we have seen a lot artistic and historic analysis, which have already convinced us how beautiful and valuable Yugur folk music is. However, facing the strong power of modern media, we need to find ways to protect it. In this part the author suggests four kinds of method to reserve the original form of Yugur folk music, including documentary reservation, folk-custom reservation, presentational reservation and educational reservation. Besides, it proposes a new concept of inheriting rather than reserving. To keep the vitality of this art form, the only way is to pass it down to the new generation. This article has made some creational proposals, in the hope of protecting this ancient art from extinction.
