Qing Dynasty is an important period of Chinese development which is also the turning point of the change from Modern Chinese to Contemporary Chinese. Ru Lin Wai Shi, written in the former part of 18th Century, is a famous long colloquial novel whose language is superb deserving much attention and close research. No one has ever studied the auxiliary Verbs in Ru Lin Wai Shi carefully and systematically before. And this thesis focuses on the auxiliary verbs and thoroughly collects all the auxiliary verbs and its application in the novel. After careful statistics, description, comparison and analysis of the auxiliary verbs in the novel, their semantics, syntax and pragmatics will also be clearly presented. This thesis consists of three parts: the preface, main body and conclusion. The preface includes three aspects: a brief introduction of Wu Jingzi and his Ru Lin Wai Shi; the ideas of scholars on the classification and scope of auxiliary verbs; the identification standard of auxiliary verbs in this thesis. According to the standard, there are totally thirty-eight auxiliary verbs in the novel which can be classified into four types representing possibility, will, necessity and permission respectively.Main body contains two parts. Part 1 is about the study on the classification of auxiliary verbs. This part collects all the auxiliary verbs in Ru Lin Wai Shi, and closely examines the semantics, syntax and pragmatics of each auxiliary verb. Part 2 compares the auxiliary verbs in Ru Lin Wai Shi and those of each period of Chinese development. This thesis adds up all kinds of its usage and generalizes their characteristics, that is, the imbalanced use of each type of auxiliary verbs, the imbalanced use of each word in the same type and the reasons of this imbalanced use.Through diachronic comparison, it is discovered that the total number of auxiliary verbs is increasing with its grammar complicated and its objects diversified. Used as adverbial modifier, there are many types. Disyllable auxiliary verbs are plentiful but rarely used. The Conclusion is that the auxiliary verbs have their common grammaticalCharacteristics, but their internal grammatical function is different from each other. In Ru Lin Wai Shi, the system of auxiliary verbs is more systematic and improved. On the vocabulary, disyllable auxiliary verbs increased and the syntax of them becomes more complicated, which is similar to contemporary Chinese still with some differences.
