Since the reform and opening-up (1978-2008), the social fabric of China has experienced dramatic changes, one of the most important of which is the emergence of the migrant peasant worker group. This group has drawn great public concern, and accordingly, left their images in films. In the past 30 years, the fourth, fifty and sixth generation of Chinese film directors, and the so-called'New Generation', have tried to record and creat images of migrant peasant workers, and have played their roles in the making and development of migrant peasant worker films. As the number of migrant peasant workers, the degree of social concern and the part each generation of film directors has contributed to this issue vary in different periods, migrant peasant worker film has gone through four stages, i.e. beginning, lingering, reviving and prospering. On the other hand, with different life experiences, film-making concepts and artistic styles, the directors created images of great diversity. This essay attempts to make a survey of the background, film-maker, film-making and characterization of each period, so as to give a full view of migrant peasant worker films since the reform and opening-up.
