XULING, as an important writer between Liang and Chen dynasty in ancient China, has been referred to as"a generation of literary master"and well-known in literary circles by his creation of Pian Wen (A sort of Parallel Prose) and poetry. But at the history of Chinese literary criticism, he has been thrown stones because of his writing of Gongti poem (A kind of Palace Style Poems) and compiling an anthology named Yu Tai Xin Yong. Actually, XULING's Pianwen and poem creation, is affluent in content, various of style, and not limited to the"Gongti poem"just in one genre. His many works of Pianwen, contrarily,have influenced deeply at that time and have been benefit from by the subsequent generations. In politics, he was loyal and faithful, upright and probity. In terms of ideology, he has been integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism in one and, has been proficient in literature and history in parallel. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the XULING's literary creation by putting them into the historical and cultural backgrounds between Liang and Chen dynasty, and to reveal the historic significance impossible to ignore of XULING in the Nan dynasty literary circles.There are seven parts in this paper.Part I Summarizes the current academic research about Xuling and the academic significance of this research.Part II Presents XULING's life and his literary creation, summarizes the overall socio-cultural atmosphere and the literature of its own development at that time, and then analyzes XULING's ethical values and behavior principles.Part III Discusses the main contents of XULING's Pianwen which includes six aspects as follows: the chants in the boudoir or pavilion, the longing for his home and country, the ambition to serve our society, and the friendship descriptions, the tombstone inscriptions, the writings for other people.Part IV Comments on the artistic achievements of XULING's Pianwen which is mainly reflected in XULING's sophisticated and lively style, and points out the reasons for its formation. Part V Discourses upon the content of thought of XULING's poems which consists of the Compliment Poems, the Frontier Poems, the Farewell Poems, the Leisure Poems, the Palace Style Poems and so on.Part VI Discusses the artistic characteristics of XULING's poems about the emotion, the structure, the rhyme schemes and the linguistic etc.Part VII Discourses upon XULING's influence on the Chinese poetry and Chinese Pianwen history to illustrate his important status.
