The Vocabulary Study Of Chengdu Dialect

Chengdu dialect is the cornucopia of Bashu culture. The richand varied vocabulary records the footsteps of thousands of year's civilization of Chengdu, involving boundless cultural implication. These words are the crystallization of cultural integration of the Chinese mainstream and Shu culture, not only contain the local custom, but also show the exotic culture of immigration. Thus, the study of the vocabulary in Chengdu dialect is of great significance to the research of Chengdu history and culture.Based on the words embodied in the book vocabulary of Chengdu dialect, written by Professor Huang Shangjun, this paper aims to verify the meaning of the words, to explore their origins from the diachronic point of view, to show the subtle distinction between synonyms from the synchronic perspective, to reveal its historical and cultural origins by exploring its justification for coinage, the formation and evolution of the vocabulary further discussed.The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter I provides an overview of the study of vocabulary in Chengdu dialect. The significance, methods, scope and the resources of the research are also presented. Chapterâ…¡is the detailed description of the vocabulary, attempting to explore the internal relationship between some words which have the same meaning but different forms.Chapterâ…¢discusses the justification of the vocabulary of Chengdu dialect. Focusing on the cultural implication of the words, it analyzes the psychological tendency of the formation of words and reveals the intrinsic link among the formation of words, the history and culture.Chapter IV `inqueires into the formation and evolution of the vocabulary, considering that getting closer of Chengdu dialect to Putonghua will be an inevitable as well as long-term process.Chapterâ…¤is a brief summary of the paper. It sums up the five factors impacting the formation and evolution of the vocabulary, summarizes the three types of psychological and cultural tendency showing in the process of word-coining: visualization, superstition (the pursuit of good luck and happiness) and utilitarianism.There are totally 711 entries, of which 333 entries haven't been included in the "Chinese Dictionary", the very meaning of 55 words are verified, documentary evidence earlier than Chinese Dictionary for 39 words has been cited, the documentary evidence for 18 words that have not been recorded in Chinese Dictionary have been found.
