Motivation Of Picto-phonetic Characters In Frequently Used Characters

My research used the form of frequently used characters commonly as the researching object, discussed the relationship between semantic symbol and semantic, phonetic symbol and pronunciation, and analyzed the motivation of picto-phonetic character and the change of the motivation according to the graphic form.Among present-day Chinese characters, picto-phonetic characters account for the majority. The beginning picto-phonetic characters was made by adding semantic symbol to borrowed characters or adding phonetic symbol to semantogram. Picto-phonetic characters were formed by semantic symbol and phonetic symbol. With the development of Chinese characters, graphic form, pronunciation and semantic are keeping changing because of all kinds of reasons, especially clerical change, simplification and the mistakes occurring during the writing. Changes of semantic are mainly because of borrowing and extending of the meaning. Changes of pronunciation mainly reflect on the pronunciation of ancient and modern. Because of these changes, the motivation of picto-phonetic characters became weak even disappeared. My research analyzed the modern graphic form together with motivation of protoform to statistic how many picto-phonetic characters there are in the form of frequently used characters. Then we analyzed the system of semantic symbol and phonetic symbol, and statistics the function of semantic symbol and phonetic symbol. Finally, we talked about the phenomenon of some phonetic symbol ideographic.
