In recent years, while the vocational school's scale extends rapidly, the qulity of the student is decended at the same time, especially for their study. English teaching assessment reformation becomes an important problem in the vocational schools in China. Under such circumstances the traditional evaluation method—summative evaluation, which just relies on a test paper and a score to evaluate the students, doesn't work well at all as it does in middle schools. We have lacked general analysis to traditional test and all-around comprehension to the meaning of learning assessment for many years. It means that there is a shortcoming in the field of assessment. Teachers and educators should reflect and advocate new principles, means and methods of assessment. Especially on the background of curriculum reform, We language teachers should focus on assessment reform. Based on this problem, this paper is trying to explore an efficient way of how to assess the secondary vocational school students'English learning more rationally, and propose a practical formative assessment mode. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the study and its significance. Chapter two reviews the literature in order to provide the contextual and theoretical background to the present study. Chapter three introduces some common formative assessment method, including portfolios, course work, conferences, observations, performance assessment, and project cooperation. Chapter four is the description of the methodology and the procedures for data collection and analysis used in the study.
