Studies On Context Dynamic Adaptation In E-C Subtitle Translation A Case Study-Legends Of The Fall

With the development of mass media and globalization, international culture exchanges have become more and more popular and important. The popular carrier of human culture, movie, has gained great development and been used as a main method of language learning and culture exchanges. Movie has played a new and much more significant role in our daily life.As movies are playing an increasingly indispensable role in the intercultural communication, movie subtitle translation has become a flourishing field of research and been paid some attention to. As a special translation mode, the subtitling of foreign movies is gaining more importance in both the practice of translation and intercultural communication. Considering the special features and technical constraints (space and time) relating to subtitled movies, this paper makes suggestions for the translation theory proper to this particular translation type from the perspective of context dynamic adaptation proposed by Jef Verschueren. It puts a great emphasis on the contextual correlates of adaptation.Taking the film Legends of the Fall as a case study, this paper attempts to explore the impact of context adaptation on the strategies of movie subtitling on the basis of dynamic context adaptation theory.In this paper, the writer recapitulates the applicability of context adaptation theory in movie subtitle translation in terms of the special features and technical constraints of movie subtitles. What's more, along with the time and space constraints upon movie subtitles, the writer focuses on the analysis of linguistic context, cultural context and situational context in regard to subtitle translations. Finally, through the analysis of the subtitles of Legends of the Fall, the context adaptation theory is fully investigated on the basis of detailed analysis of different cultural context, situational context and linguistic context of Chinese and English in relation to subtitle translation, and also some translation strategies from the perspective of context adaptation are tentatively concluded. This paper aims to be helpful and conductive to the practical movie subtitle translation which is guided by the theory of context adaptation applied in movie subtitle translation.
