Reading is a main way to grasp linguistic knowledge and get information. The newly revised Teaching Requirements of College English (2004) requires that college students have a relatively higher level of competence in English reading. However, the traditional English teaching mainly focus on linguistic competence, such as vocabulary, sentence and grammar. So the author applied Halliday & Hason's discourse analysis theory to reading teaching through classroom experiment to verity the teaching effect. After collected from the experiment, the data was analysed by SPSS. Then the author got the conclusion that the theory of English discourse can play an important role in comprehending the text and it can be applied in teaching of college English reading in several appropriate ways. In the teaching of college English reading,the application of discourse analysis theory can be treated as a strategy as well as a necessary supplement to the traditional teaching method.
