| The concept of genre originated from the study of literature and literary criticism, in recent years, genre analysis of nonliterary works has become an important field of genre analysis. Compared with other methods, genre analysis reveals the higher-level organization and strategies of texts and, besides, the communicative purposes and strategies in using the language.The annual report is a legally required document submitted to the stockholders by the management. It discloses information on corporate performance during the previous year and forecasts the operations of the coming year. Many scholars have been exploring this field for years. But much work remains to be done, particularly with linguistic research on this important corporate document.The purpose of this research is to survey, evaluate and analyze the genre features of Chairs' Statements in Annual Reports, through providing a critical review of the previous studies related to the research of the genre analysis and Chairs' Statements, and analyzing the different moves manipulated by writers of Chairs' Statements within the framework of the Swalesian School. The author first selects 40 Chairs' Statements as study material, and then analyses the move structure of Chairs' Statements according to its communicative purposes. At last, it comes to the conclusion that Chairs' Statements can be considered as a promotional genre based on the move structure and the communicative purposes it sets out to achieve, the findings of this research can apply to writing teaching and provide some new methods to business English writing teaching. |
