The Awareness Of Pioneer

The May Fourth era experienced a changing society and served as a turning point for building a new culture as well. Social trend and issues had become the focus attention for the young people at that period. The depression toward life was the common problems which the conscious young people faced everyday. As the awakening new women, they began to view the world from the perspective of new age. Their exploration of life demonstrated the female's distinctive thinking and judgment when they were thinking of life. On searching and writing for love, the May 4th female writers showed the unique life wisdom and sensitivity of their contemporaries. The thesis focuses on this issue. Some representative writers and their related works are selected to argue it. The writers selected are Bingxin, Feng Yuanjun, Lu Yin, and Ding Ling.The thesis is divided into Part I and Part II.Part I is about the fraternity which was advocated by Bingxin. This is a kind of ethical love. The maternal love, as the fundament of human relations, had naturally become the center of all the kinds of love. Bingxin strongly promoted the power of maternal love. She reconstructed the value of a new ethical culture with the "love philosophy" which was focused on maternal love. However, because of the abstract,ultra-realistic, and idealistic inherent feature of "love philosophy" and the extreme cruelty and darkness of politics, the "love philosophy" could not confront with the force of evil eventually. Part II treats of the existent love------the specific love between menand women. This part discusses several representative view of love between men and women respectively. Firstly, Feng Yuanjun's love novels expressed the restricted individual values through the protagonists' striving for freedom of love. Secondly, taken Lu Yin's related novels as example, the writer discusses this question—what would happen if women were allowed to choose a mate freely. The disappointing marriage emerged in the works had implied the conflicts between the freedom of individual and the unfreedom of overwhelming community. Lastly,Shafei, described by Dingling, as the first women who looked into themselves and examined the deepest love of women, made the pursuit of love in all the combination of body and soul. However, Shafei's "Seclusion" eventually witnessed the loss of the value of individual love. It also simultaneously proved that the love in the combination of body and soul is only an eternal pursuit of human beings.As the pioneering generation, the May 4th women finally realized that only "love" cannot solve all the problems of life in the exploration journey of life.
